Geethanjana Gunawardena - UPFA No 12 Colombo District.

Was born on 24th February 1952 in Colombo to a family of political lineage. His parents, the Late Philip Gunawardena and Late Mrs. Kusumasiri Gunawardena were veteran Parliamentarians. Is familied with a son.  After completing secondary education in Sri Lanka, pursued academic studies in the UK obtaining a BSc (Mechanical Engineering) from the Polytechnic of the South Bank (University of South Bank, London) in 1983 and continued as a Post Graduate Research Assistant until 1987 and returned to Sri Lanka. Is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, having received the award in April 2008.  Back home, joined the Mahajana Ekasth Perumuna (MEP) and contested the General Election in 1989. The MEP is a constituent party of the currently ruling Peoples Freedom Alliance – UPFA  Was a Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka from 1989 – 1994 (MEP) and of the Colombo Municipal Council from 1997 – 2000. Re-entered Parliament in 2004 and continues to date (UPFA/MEP), having served as the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees of the Parliament for 4 years from May 2004 – July 2008.   He functioned in government as the Minister of Housing (July 2008 – April 2010), Deputy Minister of External Affairs (April 2010-December 2010), Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning.(December 2010 – October 2012 ) and as Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation from October 2012 till January 2015.  In Parliament; has served as Member of the Committee on Standing Orders, Committee of Parliamentary Business, the House Committee and the Select Committee to look into the Serious Escalation of Grave Crimes and that to Assess the Condition of Parliamentary Complex and as Chairman of Committees, chaired the Standing Committees on the Bills on Disaster Management and Computer Crimes. Is a Member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committees on Finance and Planning, Civil Aviation, Research and Technology, Transport, Highways and on Plantation Industries.   Is the party organizer of the Avissawella Electorate in the Colombo District and Chairman - Decentralized Capital Budget Programme and Divisional Coordinating Committees of Development Projects of the Electorate. Is also the Vice president of the Sri Lanka Industrial and Commercial Services Union and the Central Council of Ceylon Trade Unions.  Aa a Parliamentarian and as the Deputy Speaker has attended several International Conferences and Seminars and Study Programs organized by the IPU, CPA, IPSS and SAARC.  Was a member of the Sri Lankan Delegation at the 16th Session of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Havana, Cuba (2006), 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (2006) and the 16th Ministerial Meeting of the NAM on the 50th Anniversary of the Movement held in Bali, Indonesia (May 2011).   Has led Sri Lankan Government Delegations to the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum in Hanoi, Vietnam (July 2010), 10th Council of Ministers’ Meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation, Sanaa, Yeman (2010), 4th Global Forum on Migration and development in Puerto Vallarte, Mexico (November, 2010), the 44th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank in Hanoi (May 2011). 2011 and the World Cities Scientific Development Forum in Chengdu, Sichuan, People’s Republic of China (August 2011).  Attended the 200th Mexican Independence Anniversary Celebration in Mexico (September 2010) as the representative of Sri Lanka.
An engineer with an unblemished record and character with over 25 years experience as a people's representative and over 40 years in politics in Sri Lanka.
